BRIDGES stands for Building Recovery of Individual Dreams and Goals through Education and Support. The BRIDGES program was founded by the Tennessee Mental Health Consumers Association. The BRIDGES program includes education classes and support groups. BRIDGES support groups are facilitated by trained class members from the BRIDGES Education Course. They are based on the

Principles of Support

  1. I believe there are sources of inner strength that will sustain me in times of crisis.
  2. I believe there are people who will care for and support me in my progress toward recovery.
  3. I accept that I have been diagnosed with a mental illness. For this, I will not blame myself.
  4. I will forgive myself and others for mistakes of the past. Through this struggle to forgive, I will move forward in my recovery.
  5. I understand and acknowledge that this mental illness has an impact on every aspect of my life.
  6. I will recognize and let go of those things I cannot control.
  7. I accept responsibility for my own recovery: physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
  8. I choose to live in the present rather than dwelling on the past, or worrying about the future.
  9. I will set myself up to succeed by building on reasonable expectations for myself and others.
  10. I choose to rediscover and rebuild myself, to be proud of who I am and to grow in my relationships with others.

United Self-Help partners with the National Institute of Mental Health to inform the public about mental health disorders, reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness, and increase the public’s awareness of the importance of basic and clinical research in advancing knowledge of the brain and behavior.
